Understanding your aged care options
There are several types of aged care available in Australia. Understanding the differences helps you choose the right option.
Support at Home (Home Care)
Stay living at home while receiving government-funded assistance with daily tasks — personal care, domestic help, nursing, and allied health. Available based on assessed needs and financial means.
Residential Aged Care
24/7 care in a facility for people who can no longer safely live at home. Includes accommodation, meals, personal care, and medical support.
Short-Term Respite Care
Temporary care for your loved one — giving family carers a break. Available in-home and in residential facilities, with government-funded days each year.
Retirement Living
Retirement villages are for active, independent seniors and are not the same as aged care — they don’t include personal care or nursing.
